How big is your To-Do List?
If it’s anything like mine, it’s LOOOOONG…. and feels like it’s never ending.
You feel overwhelmed with everything you have and want to accomplish, but it feels like there’s no time to get it all done.
Know what? There’s isn’t enough time. Sorry. I hate breaking bad news, but it’s true. We will always have more things to do than time.
So, what’s the secret to getting things done and clearing your To-Do List?
ONE THING.
Each day, decide what is the most important priority for you that day. Put that on your list. Stop there. Don’t add anything else. Focus your time and energy on completing that one thing. Avoid distractions and other things that come up until you are finished your one thing.
Once it’s done, scratch it off and add ONE more thing to the list. Work on that. Complete and repeat until your day is over.
I know, sometimes it seems like everything is a priority. But it can’t be. What’s the one thing that’s most important for your health, family, work, business, etc. THAT DAY? Do that.
Here’s the thing. You won’t actually just do one thing each day. You’ll end up doing more than one. But, the secret is to focus on one thing at a time. And, even if you actually only end up doing one thing; you will feel a sense of accomplishment because you completed something…instead of working on 5 different things but finishing nothing.
I have personally been using this model/way of thinking for the past few weeks and I can tell you that it works. Every day I ask myself, ‘what do I need to do for my clients today?’ (because my clients are my number one priority). Once those things, like emails/prep/research, are done I ask myself, ‘what’s the most important thing I need to do today to grow my business?’ Then I do that.
Of course I still have a long To-Do List, but know what? Each and every day I feel a sense of accomplishment. I have completed tasks and am doing things to move my clients and my business forward. It feels awesome!!
I realize it may seem crazy, but I urge you to try it out for a week. Then report back to me with how it went. I’m curious to know if others have the same results.
great idea, Lydia! I’m on it.
